Race Day Hydration Tips
PROBLEM:
During long-distance races (marathons), pre-COVID, and other endurance running events, event producers had their food tables open for runners to refuel between miles 18 and 20, which is considered the ideal time for carbohydrate reloading before heating the wall. Runners had the option to grab a variety of foodstuffs, usually cut in half or quarters for easy consumption.
Bagels, bananas, apples, oranges, dried fruit, etc… could be found on the tables without sneeze guards or any other form of protection from the elements.
Within the past decade, there have been advancements with gel shots (Clif Bar) and gel packets (other suppliers).
Question: What is the most likely disease that a runner can get when eating open food that has been contaminated?
Your health and well-being are our top priority, and it’s important to be informed about potential health risks to protect yourself
CORRECTION:
Staying properly hydrated during a race is crucial for performance and well-being. Make sure to sip water frequently and consider carrying your own hydration pack or belt for easy access to fluids throughout the course.
Dehydration can lead to fatigue, cramps, and decreased performance. What’s your go-to hydration strategy on race day?
Answer: Ensure that all food handling at your event is done by trained volunteers who wear protective gear to prevent contamination. Recruiting individuals with food safety certification is your best defense against any risks. Learn more about this topic in one of our certification levels at RACE DIRECTOR UNIVERSITY.
