A Journey Through Time and Distance

Our documentary, ‘Black Americans and the Marathon Distance,’ captures the essence of marathon running in Chicago, Boston, and Los Angeles. Featuring interviews with top athletes, race directors, and sports science researchers, this project delves into the historical and cultural factors influencing Black American participation in long-distance running. With insights from 66 experts, including renowned marathoners and avid runners, we explore the challenges and triumphs faced by Black American marathon participants.

The couple on the left, Troy Harding and Noni Gaylord, were members of Max Fitness and had recently completed the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon. A gathering of volunteers and running club members came together for post-race refreshments and camaraderie. It is estimated that Black Americans accounted for 3% of the long-distance running population between 2001 and 2009.
Through candid conversations and compelling footage, we aim to shed light on the underrepresentation of Black Americans in marathon events and celebrate those who have paved the way. This documentary is a tribute to their resilience, dedication, and passion for the sport.

“The Black Americans and the Marathon Distance” was captured in Chicago, Boston, and Los Angeles, with additional footage from various race directors and agencies.

This project involved conversations with 66 event producers, sports science researchers, executive directors, authors, race directors, renowned marathoners, and avid runners to delve into the reasons behind Black Americans’ limited involvement in long-distance running.

Sections include insights on the Lasalle Bank Chicago Marathon, discussions of Kenyan runners, reflections on the challenges faced in marathons, profiles of Black American marathon participants, experiences at the Army-Run 10 Milers and Marathons, insights into Students Run L.A., hypothetical scenarios featuring Michael Jordan, and snapshots of Max Fitness—Chicago and Chicago Tri Masters.

Marathon running presents numerous challenges, from physical endurance to mental fortitude. For Black American marathoners, societal and cultural barriers often compound these challenges. Our documentary highlights the experiences of these athletes, offering a glimpse into their journeys and the obstacles they have overcome.
